Why Don’t Delivery Drivers Ring the Doorbell?
TL;DR
- Drivers may not ring if no signature is required or contactless delivery is requested.
- Difficulty finding the doorbell, especially in apartments, can prevent a ring.
- Some customers request no ringing, such as for sleeping children or privacy reasons.
- Pandemic practices introduced contactless deliveries, reducing direct interaction.
The courier didn’t ring the doorbell or knock on the door upon delivery, and now you feel frustrated. We understand that it may be quite an unfortunate situation. Still, it may be helpful to see the problem from the courier’s perspective and understand some of its reasons.
- Delivery drivers follow instructions. Usually, when booking a courier service, you are asked to provide as many details as possible. And the way of notifying could be one of them. Namely, you should write a comment if there are any specifications regarding the delivery upon booking.
- No signature is required. If the shipment does not require a signature and you do not specify how you would want to receive your package, the driver may leave it on the porch.
- Difficulty finding the doorbell. This is especially important if you are living in an apartment building. You need to ensure that the courier driver can easily find the name to ring the bell. Some people do not have it, so the drivers cannot notify the recipients about the package delivery.
- The pandemics. Times are changing, and we saw that with the recent pandemics hit. The delivery couriers during the pandemics were asked to not knock on the doors or ring the doorbells due to the contactless delivery policy. If you are unsure what is contactless delivery, read here.
- Common practice. It may come as a surprise, but many people are requesting that the courier driver not knock or ring the doorbell upon delivery. People with young children or other private matters would rather not be disturbed by package deliveries. And as such, this has become the standard practice for some drivers.
